How Long Does a Family Photography Session Take?

bLOG CATEGORIEs + Search

The short answer? Most family photography sessions take about an hour. But the number isn’t really what makes a session go well and it isn’t really what decides how long your session will last. I’m also not a photographer who puts your family on a timer because no one wants to feel that type of stress. Read below to find out how long a family photography session actually takes and what to expect from start to finish.

Quick Summary

Most family photography sessions take about an hour from start to finish. The exact timing of your session depends on your family and your little ones. I’ll follow the lead of your family the whole way through. You can expect your Fort Worth family session to last somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour and a half, give or take as needed.

How Long Does a Family Photography Session Usually Take?

Some family sessions wrap up in 45 minutes, and some run closer to an hour and a half. If you immediately start to panic when you hear an hour and a half, please don’t worry. It doesn’t mean a camera will be on you the entire time.

The beauty of a family photography session is that we go at your family’s pace. We take breaks when your little ones need them, wander around the park or your home, and create a space where you can relax instead of feeling like you have to perform. After all, we don’t want stiff photos. We want photos that truly feel like yours. For some families that might take 45 minutes and for others we may need a little more time.

That said, a family session isn’t an all-day event. I set aside a dedicated window for each family, which is plenty of time to slow down, take breaks, and follow the lead of your family.

What Actually Happens During a Family Photography Session?

Nobody wants a camera in their face nonstop. That can feel intimidating and awkward. Instead of cramming everything in twenty minutes, we follow your family’s lead. That means our time together includes some breaks, time for kids to play, and time for parents to breathe as needed.

We’ll typically start with the classic “smile at the camera” photo and then mix things up from there. I’ll guide you on what to do, where to stand, when to look at the camera, and when to just sit back and be together. I’ll walk you through the different groupings and capture the special little moments in between – all while paying attention to your family.

Rather than asking everyone to stare at me and smile, I lean more towards prompts and setting up scenes. “Whisper something really silly in Mommy’s ear.” Let’s count to ten slowly in super silly voices.” Little things like that help everyone relax and leave room for real personalities to shine through. There will also be moments where I pull back completely and document your family just as you are. And before your session, you’ll fill out a questionnaire so I can get to know your family and make your session even more personal.

Most of the photos in my portfolio come from full-length sessions, not rushed minis. The detail shots, the candid moments, the tender snuggles between mom and baby – these don’t always happen on a rushed schedule. They happen once you start to feel more comfortable, once I get to know your family, and when there’s time to notice the little things.

Why Do Some Family Sessions Run Longer Than Others?

I don’t set a timer for your session (unless we’re talking about a mini session event which is time based). But I do set aside a specific block of time for your session, and within that window, I’ll pay attention to the people in front of my lens. I want your final gallery to reflect your family and quick mini sessions or rushed sessions don’t always give space for your gallery to be unique and authentic to you.

Larger families sometimes take a little longer. Toddlers may be in the mood to explore and run around. Expecting moms might have multiple outfits. Babies may be extra hungry. Or a family might just need a bit more time to loosen up and be themselves. Any of these things can stretch a session out. With older kids or just one baby, a session might naturally run shorter, and that’s okay too. Either way, most sessions wrap about around the hour to hour and a half range, and by then, we’ll have everything we need.

As a mom myself, I know the “my kid won’t last that long” worry so well. But as a Fort Worth family photographer, I can almost guarantee it’s not about lasting a set amount of time. It’s about not feeling stressed or frazzled. Taking our time, based on your family needs, is what makes the difference.

Does the Time of Day Change How Long the Session Runs?

As a natural light photographer in Fort Worth, the light guides our session, from the start time to how long we can shoot. An evening session that runs up to sunset will end right around then, because once the light is gone, we have nothing left to work with.

At-home sessions depend on the light in your unique space. Studio sessions run on a set rental time, so we’ll work within that window of time.

Preparing for Your Family Photography Session

What you do before your session matters more than you might think.

Before your session, I’ll send over a few reminders along with a session guide that details what to expect. The main thing to know: family sessions are meant to be fun and relaxed. Think “family date night.”

I know how easy it is to worry about whether your kids will “behave” but I promise it’s better to let that go. I’m not expecting, or looking to capture, any particular kind of behavior. Let them be themselves, don’t sweat the little things, and just enjoy each other. As a mom to two little ones, I’m not judging, I’m simply observing and documenting the beauty that is there – the silly, the wild, the pauses, and whatever else your family brings that day. We want to capture your family exactly as you are in that moment.

A few things that help:

  • If we are meeting somewhere, arrive 10-15 minutes early so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
  • Have essentials ready: extra water, baby wipes, a change of clothes for babies (just in case), and a couple non-messy snacks.
  • Bring a special small toy or stuffie if your child has one. Keep these out of sight until needed. I love bringing these books along to sessions too.
  • Prep your little ones ahead of time. If they’re old enough, let them know you’re meeting a friend who’s going to take pictures of your family, and that it’s meant to be fun.
  • Especially for at-home sessions, think of something your family does together. We can incorporate this in your session to help everyone relax (family game night, dinner outside, running in the sprinklers, etc.)
  • During your session, sit back and relax. Enjoy the little things and trust that we’re getting exactly what’s needed.

Planning the Right Amount of Time for Your Family Photography Session

The exact length matters much less than how the session feels. I want you to walk away thinking “That wasn’t bad. That was easy and fun!” And I want your images to feel true to that experience: joyful, authentic, tender and just like you.

Whether your photography session lasts 45 minutes or closer to an hour and a half, you can trust that we’ll have everything we need.

BEHIND THE LENS

I'm Amber

I’m a photographer located in the Fort Worth area where I live with my husband and our two kids.

I’ve had a camera in hand since childhood, but it wasn’t until motherhood that I truly wished I could freeze time.

As a mom to two young kids, I know just how quickly the seasons pass. With coffee in one hand and a never-ending to-do list in the other, photography gives us the space to pause, slow down, and truly cherish the memories.

My goal for every session is to capture your family in a way that is authentic, while making the process easy and meaningful. I want you to look back at your photos years from now and see just how beautiful it all was.
