Family Photos With Toddlers: Is a Full-Length Session Too Long?

If you have a toddler, or more than one, the idea of booking an hour-long ish session for family photos with toddlers might sound like a lot. You may be wondering how they’ll possibly make it through the entire session. Will they lose interest after ten minutes? What if they don’t want to be held? What if they just want to run around the entire time?

As a family photographer in Fort Worth and a mom myself, I can tell you that toddlers are rarely interested in doing anything simply because we’ve asked them to. And I don’t expect them to. (I’m guessing you don’t really want your photos to showcase that either.)

You want to see their little personalities, the quirks that make them them, and a gallery that shows more than the traditional “smile-at-the-camera” photos.

A full-length family session with toddlers isn’t an hour of sitting still, smiling, and looking at my camera. And how boring would that be? In fact, having more time can often make family photos with toddlers feel easier and more relaxed.

Your family photos are more than an item on a checklist. Years from now, these photos will only gain value. And I think the actual photo experience itself matters too which is why I’ve focused on making the experience enjoyable (and real).

The family session I’m sharing throughout this post is one of my favorites. With two young kids, we spent the evening moving, playing, exploring, and following their lead. It’s such a sweet example of why a full-length family session with toddlers can work so well.

Can More Time Make Family Photos With Toddlers Easier?

There’s a misconception that a quicker session is easier with toddlers. But here’s a secret – I actually think more time makes family photos with toddlers easier.

Instead of scrambling to fit everything into a 15 to 20 minute window, a full-length family session gives us time to let the photos happen throughout our time together. There’s so much less pressure to get any sort of “perfect” photo right away because we have time. We have space for toddlers who want to explore, need a snack break or a quick distraction, or even need a boo-boo mended.

And here’s the part that really matters – you and your spouse will feel less stressed too. And that matters SO much when we’re talking about family photos with toddlers. When you can relax and enjoy the time with your family, your toddler will feel that too.

Whether your session takes 45 minutes or a little over an hour, we have time to let the kids explore, be silly, eat a snack, play a game, and just be kids. We aren’t rushing to check off a list of photos before time runs out. My family sessions follow your family’s lead, not a clock, so rather than watching a timer, we move at your pace and make sure we’re truly capturing this season as it is.

Will We Be Taking Photos the Whole Time?

Absolutely not! We are there for photos, but we’re also working with a real family – your family. Which means we’ll follow your kids’ lead.

Does your toddler need a break to stack some rocks? Perfect, let’s do that. I can photograph just you and your spouse while they play at your feet, capture some sweet candids, or maybe we simply take a break and pause. And honestly, sometimes those toddlers give the biggest smile for the camera while holding the rock they just found (haha).

These family photos matter, and so do the memories you make while taking them. Letting your kids be who they are is part of it. My job is to guide your family, work with your toddler and anything they bring that day, and deliver a gallery of images true to your family. Your job is to relax and enjoy the time together.

So, long answer short, will your kids need to be taking photos the whole time? No. I wouldn’t expect them to one bit.

What If My Toddler Just Wants to Do Their Own Thing?

Perfect! Before your session, I’ll have you complete a questionnaire that tells me a little more about your family. You can share things your family loves to do, what you want captured of your little one, and what you want to remember most years from now. From there, we can tailor your session to your family and your toddler.

Do they love skipping rocks? Maybe the creek is the right place. Do they love exploring? Let’s check out a new park. Do they love running around your backyard? Maybe at-home photos are the right fit this year.

And even if we plan it all and then start photos and your toddler wants to stay in your arms, show me their favorite stuffie, or run around and explore because they’re curious – great!

As your photographer I’ll observe, gently guide, and capture the beauty that’s already there. When we have a full-length session together, we have time for these things. Your toddler can do their own thing AND we can create beautiful family photos.

Toddlers are going to do their own thing. Instead of trying to cram everything into a mini session, having more time gives us the space to slow down, follow their lead, and make family photos feel less stressful for everyone.
