Choosing a Location for Your Fall Family Photos

One question I get all the time for Fort Worth fall family photos is, “Where should we take our photos?” My answer has layers, because there isn’t one perfect location for every family.

The first thing to think about is whether you’re leaning toward at-home, outdoor, or studio. At-home sessions are a great fit for most families. You get to stay in your favorite place, and we document your family together somewhere that’s truly yours. And if the outdoors is more your vibe, it’s one of the prettiest times of year for a session outdoors.

For at-home sessions, we’ll consider the best time of day for your home and what all you want captured. We’ll consider what parts of your house to use whether it’s just indoors, out back, or maybe a combination of the two. Some families love to document everyday things during at-home sessions like a neighborhood walk, or playing in the backyard together. There are a ton of possibilities when considering at-home sessions.

For outdoor and studio sessions, I’ll share my favorite spots around Fort Worth and Dallas. Lighting, time of day, the overall feel you’re going for, any special accommodations, and your unique family all factor into the options I send over. I have a variety of locations that work great for any vision across the DFW area.

Each location has its own feel, but the way I photograph stays the same: a lifestyle approach to every session.

Not sure which type of session is the right fit? That’s what I’m here for. I’ll help you figure out the session type and location that feels most like your family.

When to Schedule Your Outdoor Session

Fall in North Texas is one of my favorite times of year for family photos. The temperatures finally start to cool off (yay!), leaves begin changing color, and every month has something a little different to offer. Here’s generally what to expect throughout the season.

September – Greener backgrounds, warmer evenings, and later sunsets. Most spots are usually less crowded before the busy season kicks in.

October & November – My busiest months, so I recommend reaching out early. The weather is typically beautiful and we usually start seeing more color around DFW. Keep in mind that after the time change, sunset is about an hour earlier, and weekends at popular spots can get crowded, something I’ll factor into your location options too.

December – If you’re hoping for the best fall color, early December is often a great choice around Fort Worth and Dallas. It can be a little chillier, but we can always adjust if it’s unusually cold.

What to Expect Before and During Your Family Session

From the moment you inquire to the day your gallery arrives, I’m with you every step of the way. Once you’ve reached out, we’ll chat through the specifics, then you’ll book. A short questionnaire comes with your booking so I can get to know your family and plan accordingly.

I’ll share outfit ideas, give you access to my client closet of women’s dresses, and help with anything else as we plan. Whether you already have a vision in mind or just want me to handle it all – I’ve got you.

Then it’s session day! You get to hang out with your family while I take care of the rest. I’ll follow your lead the whole time, building in snack and exploring breaks as needed, and capturing a mix of posed and candid moments between you and your people.

I’ll send over a few of my favorite tips for little ones, but honestly, what matters most is how you show up on the day. Relax, enjoy whatever your kids bring, and I’ll take care of the rest. No need to tell them to smile, bribe them, or do anything special, that’s my job. You just get to be together.

What Happens After Your Session

About three weeks later, your images arrive in a digital gallery. All your edited photos are included, along with a print credit you can use directly in the gallery store. Your photos deserve to leave your camera roll and the print credit is designed to help you get started on preserving your favorite moments.

You’ll find a variety of professional prints and custom products there. For custom artwork and albums, you’ll pick your favorite images and I’ll design everything for you. We can meet virtually or grab coffee to map out gallery walls and album details together.

Whether you want to be hands-on with the design or hand it all off to me (I get it…so many to-do lists already), I’ll make sure you walk away with keepsakes your family can treasure for years.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fort Worth Fall Family Photos

When should I reach out to book Fort Worth fall family photos?

Fall is one of my busiest times of year, so I recommend reaching out about 2–3 months ahead, though it’s never too early to ask.

What should we wear for fall family photos?

After booking, I’ll send over outfit ideas and styling suggestions for your family, plus access to my client closet of dresses that photograph beautifully. Want a head start? Download my free outfit guide here with direct links for shopping.

Can we still get great photos if my kids are busy being kids?

As a mom myself, I get it. You’re wondering if they’ll cooperate, if they’ll even smile, or if they can make it through the whole session. Here’s the truth: kids will be kids no matter what, and honestly, that’s my favorite part of the job.

I’m ready to roll with whatever your kids bring that day. I don’t expect them to sit still or smile the whole time, I just want them to be who they are in that moment (and that’s what you really want photographed too). You’ll end up with a gallery that tells the real story of this little season in your family’s life.

What happens if it rains?

I keep my calendar limited each month so I can stay flexible for the families I work with. If rain’s in the forecast, we’ll talk through backup options and make a plan together.

Do you offer any fall mini sessions?

I offer a handful of holiday mini sessions each year – Christmas Tree Farm Minis and Santa Photos (Learn more here).

For family sessions specifically, I recommend the full-length option. Timing is flexible and built around your family, with most sessions running 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The kind of work you see in my portfolio happens when a session isn’t rushed – we give kids time to settle in, adults time to warm up, and your family time to just be together.

BEHIND THE LENS

I'm Amber

I’m a photographer located in the Fort Worth area where I live with my husband and our two kids.

I’ve had a camera in hand since childhood, but it wasn’t until motherhood that I truly wished I could freeze time.

As a mom to two young kids, I know just how quickly the seasons pass. With coffee in one hand and a never-ending to-do list in the other, photography gives us the space to pause, slow down, and truly cherish the memories.

My goal for every session is to capture your family in a way that is authentic, while making the process easy and meaningful. I want you to look back at your photos years from now and see just how beautiful it all was.
