One question I get often as a DFW newborn photographer is “What is the best age for newborn photos?” And my answer is always the same: there isn’t one “best” age for newborn photos.

Whether we capture your baby in their first couple weeks of life or wait a little longer, like near the 4 week mark (or beyond), all those all of those precious and tiny details are worth documenting. Their little fingers, sweet snuggles, and sleepy yawns are there all throughout those first few months.

Quick Answer

There really is no one right age for lifestyle newborn photos. Whether your baby is just a few days old or 4 weeks old, newborn photos are perfect any time during those first few months with baby.

Why 4 Weeks Old Can Be a Wonderful Time for Newborn Photos

The first couple of weeks with a newborn are often a blur. Whether you’re first-time parents or welcoming another baby into your family, those early days are usually spent in a newborn bubble. You’re learning feeding schedules, letting your body recover, adjusting to less sleep, helping siblings settle into their new roles, and simply figuring out what life looks like with a new little person in your home.

Waiting until your baby is around 4 weeks old can actually be a wonderful timeframe for newborn photos. You still have all of those sweet newborn details and that tiny baby stage but you’ve also had a little more time to catch your breath and settle into your new routines. And for many families that can make the entire experience feel a little less overwhelming.

I know that was certainly true for me. When I became a new mom, and later brought our second baby home, the first month of life felt very full and completely chaotic (and I wasn’t quite feeling back to myself yet). Rather than feeling rushed to squeeze in newborn photos, giving yourself time to simply be with your baby and settle into this new season can make your session feel much more relaxed and enjoyable.

But will my baby be “too old” for newborn photos at 4 weeks?

Oh, absolutely not!

I truly mean that. Yes, babies change quickly during their first few months of life, but honestly, they are adorable throughout every stage. There really isn’t one set perfect time to document this season.

And as an added bonus, babies tend to be more alert and awake after the first few weeks, so we’ll often have even more opportunities to capture those cute expressions and wide-eyed looks. By this point, many parents also feel a little more confident and settled into life with their baby allowing the session to feel less like another thing on the to-do list and more like a chance to slow down and be together.

When you book me as your newborn photographer, we’ll reserve your session based on your baby’s due date. Once your baby arrives, we’ll choose the actual session date and time together based on what feels best for your family. Whether that’s during the first couple of weeks or a little further in, there isn’t one perfect timeline. I intentionally take on a limited number of newborn sessions each month so I can remain flexible and accommodate the families I work with.

Best Age for Newborn Photos: Is 4 Weeks Too Old?

At the end of the day, the best age for newborn photos is simply the age that works best for your family. There is no perfect timeline and no deadline that suddenly makes these memories less meaningful. Whether your baby is 10 days old, 4 weeks old, or even 3 months old, this season is worth documenting.

Years from now you likely won’t remember exactly how many days old your baby was during your session. You’ll remember how tiny they felt in your arms, how their fingers wrapped around yours, and what it felt like to welcome them into your family.

BEHIND THE LENS

I'm Amber

I’m a photographer located in the Fort Worth area where I live with my husband and our two kids.

I’ve had a camera in hand since childhood, but it wasn’t until motherhood that I truly wished I could freeze time.

As a mom to two young kids, I know just how quickly the seasons pass. With coffee in one hand and a never-ending to-do list in the other, photography gives us the space to pause, slow down, and truly cherish the memories.

My goal for every session is to capture your family in a way that is authentic, while making the process easy and meaningful. I want you to look back at your photos years from now and see just how beautiful it all was.
