One of my favorite places to capture your newborn is in your home! It’s a place of comfort and love, where you’re bringing your new little one. If you’re getting ready for an at-home newborn session or thinking about whether your home is the perfect spot, check out my prep tips below.

Set The Plan
As a Fort Worth family and newborn photographer, I prepare for every session, and at-home sessions are no different. Since I use natural light for my photography, planning for lighting is important, especially for at-home sessions. Each home I photograph in is unique, with different types of lighting – some bright, some only well-lit during certain times of the day, some centered around a single window. The photos in this blog took place in just two spots using only two windows. No matter the lighting situation, having a plan in place ahead of time will ensure your session goes smoothly!

Before your at-home newborn session, I will reach out for some photos or a video of rooms taken around the session start time. Send me photos of any room with light coming in even if you think the lighting isn’t perfect. I love using a variety of light in your photos, when available, as it adds an element of diversity to your gallery – so don’t hesitate to share the lighting in any room of your house! It might just be the best spot for your family photos.

Worried your home isn’t the “right” place for photos? Chances are, we can make your home work! One of my favorite aspects of at-home newborn sessions is using the unique light in your home to create beautiful images. And, don’t forget about the front or back yard – we can do a lot in so many spaces!

Fun fact: Most at home newborn sessions can take place in just ONE room by ONE good window.
No Deep Cleaning Required
I mean it – you just had a baby, and your family is adjusting to the transition. There is no need to deep clean any of the rooms. Instead, consider decluttering the spaces we plan to use for your newborn session. Grab a basket and place anything in it that you don’t want in the photos. The simpler the space, the better. Once your newborn session is done, all your things are in one place, ready to be put back.
Focus just on the rooms we’ve planned for. If we change things up during the session, no worries – I can easily move things out of the way. The goal is to keep the focus on your family, and we can always tidy up more as we go!

That’s It!
At-home newborn photography sessions are a perfect way to capture your family in this new phase. I like to keep newborn sessions simple – there’s no need to overly prep your home. Let’s keep the focus where it should be: on your family and your sweet baby.
